As a student in the Laney Graduate School, you have access to many subscription-based online resources for building skills and exploring careers. The list below can get you started.

What you will find: The Laney Graduate School is pleased to offer LGS graduate students access to Beyond the Professoriate’s professional development training platform. The platform offers recorded workshops in preparing for a range of career paths, panels and interviews with PhDs working in a variety of positions, and an interactive workbook to help guide you through the career exploration and application process.

What you will find: The Laney Graduate School is pleased to offer LGS master’s students access to Beyond Graduate School’s professional development training platform. The platform offers recorded workshops in preparing for a range of career paths, panels and interviews with graduate degree holders working in a variety of positions, and an interactive workbook to help guide you through the career exploration and application process.

How to Access: Click here to create an account and be sure to use your Emory email address to fully access the site’s resources.

What you will find: BioCareers is a job search resource for life scientists consisting of a job board, a series of live webinars, a discussion forum, and a newsletter.

How to Access: Visit the CIRTL Network Commons and sign up with your Emory email address. You may also visit Emory’s CIRTL page for more information.

What you will find: The Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL) is a network of institutions that promotes evidence-based STEM education in higher learning. CIRTL offers online courses, workshops and discussion boards that leverage expertise from various institutions. Many events are recorded and archived so they can be accessed later.

Visit https://connects.emory.edu/ and create a profile using your Emory email address. You may also log-in using your personal LinkedIn profile.

What you will find

EmoryConnects is a professional networking platform like LinkedIn created specifically for the Emory community. This tool is a great way to start building a professional network. EmoryConnects users can connect with Emory alumni by searching degree, location, industry, company, and availability. Users can offer and receive career guidance, find nearby professionals in fields of interest, and join exclusive industry-based networking groups.

How to Access

Visit Grant Forward’s homepage and log in using your Emory SSO. You may only access Grant Forward from on-campus or via a VPN connection.

What you will find

Grant Forward is an extensive database for identifying funding opportunities. It contains opportunities from over 9,000 sponsors and is constantly updated with new funders and new opportunities. Grant Forward’s team of specialists verifies every opportunity to ensure the database’s timeliness and accuracy.

How to Access: You may access this platform here.

What you will find: From designing experiments to effective science communication to professional development, this platform offers a bevy of free, self-paced, online courses to help you plan your career and build critical research skills. Course topics include building a research community, developing a clear research plan, delivering an effective talk, effective public engagement, and business concepts for life scientists.

ImaginePhD is a free resource. To access the tool, visit https://www.imaginephd.com, and create an account.

What you will find:

ImaginePhD is a career exploration and planning tool for humanists and social scientists. You will find assessments to help you think critically about your interests, skills, and values, resources to explore diverse career paths, and a planning tool to help you set and stick to professional development goals

How to Access: LinkedIn Learning is available to current Emory University students, faculty and staff. You may access this resource here.

What you will find: LinkedIn Learning (formerly Lynda.com) is an online training library with thousands of videos on professional development topics such as data, technology, leadership, design, and communication. 

How to Access:

MyIDP is a free resource that is accessible through ScienceCareers. To access the tool, visit https://myidp.sciencecareers.org and create an account.

What you will find:

MyIDP is a career exploration and planning tool for scientists. The tool features self-assessments of your interests, skills, and values, career exploration resources to help you think about the diverse careers available to individuals with advanced degrees in the STEM fields, and a career planning tool.

How to Access: Visit the NCFDD homepage and sign up using your Emory email address.

What you will find: The National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (NCFDD) provides recorded webinars, articles, and discussion boards on topics like professional and career development for faculty, postdocs, and graduate students. Highlights include a 12-week program for finishing dissertators and a 3-part webinar series about navigating the academic job market.

How to Access

Emory University offers a limited number of subscriptions to Nature Masterclass. Interested LGS students should reach out to lgs.profdev@emory.edu.

What you will find:

The Nature Masterclass Scientific Writing and Publishing online course consists of 11 hours of learning with 10-minute lessons. You will find trainings on developing writing skills, preparing manuscripts for academic journals, understanding the editorial process (including what editors look for), and submitting and revising manuscripts for publication.

What you will find

Versatile PhD helps graduate students, ABDs, and PhDs identify, prepare for, and excel in professional careers. Available resources include an online career exploration course, Options 4 Careers targeted to PhDs, a curated job board, a career and professional development planning tool, and an archive of online discussions with PhDs working in diverse career paths. Versatile PhD also sponsors online and in-person networking events for PhDs.
