Laney alums receive Distinguished Teaching Awards
Dr. Ryan Prendergast, ‘03G received the Goergen Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching from the University of Rochester. Dr. Amy Austin, ‘04G, won the Texas Board of Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award from the University of Texas System.

Jones Program in Ethics (JPE)
Strange Fruit No More? Exposing the Roots of Black Progress in the New Millennium
Presented by Camille Goldman, Brenton Boyd
Despite African Americans’ increased mobility in economic and social sectors, the notion of progress as it relates to the ‘mattering’ of black life still remains under scrutiny. Twenty years into the new millennium, Black peoples face tremendous inhibitions as a result of mass incarceration, climate change, immigration policy, and voter suppression—among others. Participants in this two-part seminar will wrestle with the following questions: How is progress measured in the afterlife of slavery? How have Black communities endured ongoing regimes of terror? What are the uses of academe in promoting justice, inclusion, and decolonization?
This is a two-part event:

Sexual Harassment Prevention Training for Graduate & Professional Students presented by Office of Respect & Office of Title IX
The sexual harassment training is a two-hour training facilitated by staff members within the Office of Title IX and the Office of Respect which focuses on the root causes of sexual harassment and how it’s allowed to manifest. Within the training there will be discussion around policies and procedures in reporting sexual harassment and other forms of sexual misconduct. The strategies given during the workshop apply to more potentially harmful situations outside of sexual harassment. The session consists of videos, discussions, brief lecturing and other interactive activities.

Fellowships
2020 Mellon/ACLS Public Fellows Competition:
Humanities and Social Sciences
The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) recently announced the tenth annual competition of the Mellon/ACLS Public Fellows program. Fellows receive stipends of $70,000 per year and have access to employer-based health insurance through the host organizations.
Additionally, ACLS provides funds for relocation and professional development. Applicants must have a PhD in the humanities or humanistic social sciences conferred between September 1, 2016, and June 19, 2020. They must have defended and deposited their dissertations no later than April 6, 2020. Applicants must be authorized to work legally in the United States. Applications will be accepted only through the ACLS online application system and must be submitted by March 18, 2020, at 9pm EDT.

2020 Mellon Public Writing Fellowship Application
The Emory Writing Program will award two Mellon Public Writing Fellowships (2020-2021) to advanced graduate students interested in community engagement and public scholarship. The fellowships are supported by the Mellon Humanities PhD Interventions Project.
MPW fellows will work 16 to 18 weeks (15-20 hours per week) with a partnering community organization during the fall semester and early spring semester. Afterward, they will return to campus to engage in dissemination activities (teaching/tutoring/presenting) for the remainder of the academic year. Application Deadline: February 24, 2020.

Digital Dissertations Scholars Program
The Digital Dissertation Scholars Program (DDSP) offers mini-grant funding up to $2,500 and personalized guidance in drafting a digital project plan. During this year-long program, students will work closely with their advisor, an interdisciplinary cohort of fellow students, and digital scholarship professionals to tailor a plan that is customized to their project’s needs. Application Deadline: March 13, 2020.

Data Incubator
The Data Science Fellowship Program from The Data Incubator is one of the most rigorous, intensive programs available today. Designed to create the data scientists of tomorrow from qualified STEM academics, this full-time, eight-week program provides the skills needed to succeed in the “best job in America.”
The Spring 2020 session runs from April 06 to May 29.

Data Science for Scientists ATL General Body Meeting: “Reproducibility in Research with R”
D ata Science for Scientists ATL will host the next general body meeting on Thursday, Feb 27th, 4pm at AMUC Room 225 (600 Means Drive). Dr. Madelyn Houser, a postdoctoral researcher working with Dr. Vicki Hertzberg in the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing and the Center for Data Science at Emory University, will be joining. She will give a talk on reproducibility in research with R.
Light refreshments will be provided.

Restorative Black Grad Yoga Workshop
Join the Office for RACE this February in a Restorative Yoga workshop run by Dr. Tiffany Johnson. Tiffany Johnson is an Assistant Professor in Organizational Behavior at Georgia Tech but also a yoga and meditation teacher. She is also one of the founders of the non-profit The Good Work Institute. La Sala: Afro-Latinidad Discussion
Centro Latinx's weekly programming series, La Sala, is focusing on Afro-Latinidad during Black History Month. The Fulbright Forum discusses the ins and outs of the Fulbright student program for graduate students.
