Jones Program in Ethics (JPE) How to translate “academia” into an accessible, meaningful story
Featuring award-winning playwright Janece Shaffer Knowing your narrative is key to being impactful, memorable and landing your next opportunity. This 105-minute session will include an introduction on how to tell a great story, how our brains are wired for stories, how truth is essential in storytelling, as well as series of questions to help you to identify your unifying themes, defining moments and unforgettable details that can be used in interview settings, in developing cover letters and in networking.
Due to popular demand, LGS will draw random numbers from the lottery for attendance. If you do not receive a confirmation email that your number was drawn then you are NOT enrolled. The lottery will close at noon on Friday, February 14. The session requires a one-on-one follow-up with Ms. Shaffer to receive full credit.

Fellowships 2020 Mellon/ACLS Public Fellows Competition: Humanities and Social Sciences
The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) recently announced the tenth annual competition of the Mellon/ACLS Public Fellows program. Fellows receive stipends of $70,000 per year and have access to employer-based health insurance through the host organizations.
Additionally, ACLS provides funds for relocation and professional development. Applicants must have a PhD in the humanities or humanistic social sciences conferred between September 1, 2016, and June 19, 2020. They must have defended and deposited their dissertations no later than April 6, 2020. Applicants must be authorized to work legally in the United States. Applications will be accepted only through the ACLS online application system and must be submitted by March 18 at 9pm EDT.
2020 Mellon Public Writing Fellowship Application
The Emory Writing Program will award two Mellon Public Writing Fellowships (2020-2021) to advanced graduate students interested in community engagement and public scholarship. The fellowships are supported by the Mellon Humanities PhD Interventions Project.
MPW fellows will work 16 to 18 weeks (15-20 hours per week) with a partnering community organization during the fall semester and early spring semester. Afterward, they will return to campus to engage in dissemination activities (teaching/tutoring/presenting) for the remainder of the academic year. Application Deadline February 24.
Digital Dissertations Scholars Program
The Digital Dissertation Scholars Program (DDSP) offers mini-grant funding up to $2,500 and personalized guidance in drafting a digital project plan. During this year-long program, students will work closely with their advisor, an interdisciplinary cohort of fellow students, and digital scholarship professionals to tailor a plan that is customized to their project’s needs. Application Deadline March 13.
Data Incubator
The Data Science Fellowship Program from The Data Incubator is one of the most rigorous, intensive programs available today. Designed to create the data scientists of tomorrow from qualified STEM academics, this full-time, eight-week program provides the skills needed to succeed in the “best job in America.”
The Spring 2020 session runs from April 06 to May 29.

Events Dissertation Bootcamp
Open to Laney Graduate Students, the one-day boot camp is an opportunity for graduate students to work on their projects for an entire day. Attendees can set and share writing goals within a supportive community of writers. Because a free meal is provided for participants, interested persons must register. Limited space is available.
Spring 2020 Mellon Interventions Event
The Mellon Humanities PhD Interventions Project invites all humanities and humanities-oriented PhD students to our Spring 2020 event: Artistic Research and Hybrid Scholarship. The event takes place on March 17-18.
ComSciCon 2020 Applications
ComSciCon 2020 is an engaging annual conference about science communication. Admission is highly competitive and requires an application.
Applications are due March 1.

Spring 2020 Career Coaching Appointments
The Office of Professional Development and Career Planning is pleased to offer a limited number of one-on-one career coaching sessions this semester. These professional coaches include Ariela Freedman, PhD, an Emory alum who specializes in the Strengths-Based approach, and Helen Klepac, MA, who brings a wealth of knowledge of career counseling and graduate student affairs. If you are interested in setting aside time for a one-on-one coaching session, please complete and submit the Career Coaching Interest Form.
