New! JPE 610: Why Do We Have IRBs or Ethics Committees Anyway? This presentation covers why IRBs and Ethics Committees are necessary to protect human participants in research studies. Also included is review the history of research abuses in the 20th century, what IRBs do today, and what IRBs, sponsors, and researchers can do to ensure that research serves everyone.

Kharen Fulton Award for Diversity, Inclusion and Community Engagement in Graduate Education The Kharen Fulton Award was created to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Kharen Fulton and her dedication to diversity in graduate education. This LGS Diversity Award will be presented to one LGS doctoral scholar to acknowledge his or her personal and professional efforts towards diversity, inclusion, and community engagement in the Laney Graduate School at Emory University. Award recipients will receive a framed citation and an award prize of $2,000. The award announcement will take place during the October 2020 celebratory recognition of Laney EDGE Fellowship Recipients.

Confronting Negative Career Beliefs and Building Resiliency The Career Beliefs inventory can help you get “unstuck” in the career planning process by identifying assumptions and beliefs that might be blocking progress. This process helps to build resiliency in examining current beliefs, processing and releasing negative beliefs and emotions, and determining new actions that can be taken based on new beliefs. Learn how to develop your personal resilience by learning strategies to deal with setbacks and challenges as they arise.
New! STEM Graduate Student Work Opportunity The Emory Global Diabetes Research Center has an urgent need for a PhD student to assist in developing a protocol for submission to Emory IRB. Previous experience in writing protocols and IRB submissions is a plus. The goal is to accelerate COVID-19 testing and treatments, especially in people with diabetes or risk factors like obesity or high blood pressure, in underserved communities.

Imagine PhD Training for Social Scientists and Humanists In this interactive workshop, graduate students will walk through a career assessment about skills, interests, and values. They will explore the range of career options available to individuals with advanced degrees in the humanities and social sciences.
Strengths-Based Interviewing Foundational Workshop This empowering workshop prepares students to navigate today's competitive job market. Participants will develop language to share their unique strengths, based on Gallup’s CliftonStrengths assessment. To attend this workshop, you agree to take the Clifton Strengths assessment at least two days before the workshop.
Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellowship Applications for the Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellowship must include an attestation letter from the applicant’s institution, provided by the Dean (see final item under Application Requirements here). Those applying for this Completion Fellowship should submit applications to the Mellon ACLS online portal by the internal deadline. Please consult the guidelines below.
2021 Hertz Fellowship The Hertz Fellowship provides financial and lifelong professional support for the nation’s most promising graduate students in science and technology. The fellowship includes up to five years of funding, valued at up to $250,000, and the freedom to pursue innovative projects wherever they may lead. Fellows also participate in ongoing mentoring, symposia, and workshops with a diverse community of more than 1200 fellows-- a set of peers who span disciplines, generations, and geography.
Jones Program in Ethics (JPE): Mini-Grants The Jones Program in Ethics is pleased to announce a series of mini-grants for Laney Graduate School PhD student research projects. A successful proposal will highlight particular ways your project engages in ethics. This could include, but is not limited to, a philosophical question, a pragmatic application, or a challenge to, or support of, cultural and societal norms. These grants will be awarded to individuals or groups who are engaged in the stated research project.

Laney Graduate Writing Group Join the weekly graduate student writing group to keep yourself accountable, make progress, and obtain feedback on your projects.
For the first hour, you will write for two 25-minute intervals using the Pomodoro technique. In the second hour, you will have the opportunity to receive feedback on your writing, via Zoom, with a member of either the Emory Writing Center or the English Language Support Program (ELSP).

The CFDE is offering a Workshop Series on “Zoom Class Engagement,” that provides extra support for instructors and TAs who are planning engaging learning activities in Zoom class settings. One-on-one feedback on existing teaching projects will be available to attendees. Participants should come with an idea in mind and a class session to work on developing.
