5 Years and Counting: The Impact of Learning about Laney
Laney Graduate School recently hosted its 5th Annual Learning about Laney: Preview Visitation, where we welcomed over 70 diverse scholars from around the nation for an overnight experience of what it's like being a part of the LGS community.
During the visitation, the guest scholars met with LGS faculty, staff, and current scholars while attending workshops, engaging in conversations, and getting advice on submitting graduate school applications that would give them a competitive edge.
Event speakers and presenters included LGS senior staff members, student organization leaders, campus life partners, LGS-EDGE Fellows and Ambassadors, and a former alum as the closing reception speaker.
Scholars also attended a mini-symposium where over 20 current LGS graduate students represented their programs and shared their research.
This year, LGS added a new element to the Learning about Laney experience. The EDGE Fellows and Ambassadors hosted an LGS-style Jeopardy game, where they tested the scholars on their LGS knowledge based on what they learned over the day. After being broken into teams, the scholars worked together to have fun and see who was ready to be an LGS student – in which they all were ready.
To close out the event, the class of 2021 alum of the Chemistry Doctoral Program, Misael Romero-Reyes, PhD, shared his journey and growth through the PhD program.
LGS is thankful for everyone who played a role in the success of this year’s event. Be on the lookout for student spotlights featuring LGS-EDGE Fellows Chaela Nutor and Kristen Patterson and an alumni spotlight on Misael Romero-Reyes. |

Last chance to register for November ELSP workshop:
Vocabulary building for professional oral communication Vocabulary building has generally been applied to academic and professional writing. But what about in academic and professional speaking? Speaking fluently does not necessarily equate with speaking professionally with accurate word choice.
In this 2-part workshop, you will identify the level of exactness in your current speech and begin substituting and adding more precise vocabulary. You will begin to build your repertoire of precise vocabulary by learning to use corpus-based tools to gain awareness of appropriate professional vocabulary; using the Academic Word List; analyzing formal, academic language; and creating your own vocabulary log. You will learn words and phrases to describe your research and explain your data; express levels of certainty when making claims; convey your perspectives; and propose solutions.
Since acquiring new vocabulary requires repeated use in meaningful context, in part 2 of the workshop, we will put your skills and knowledge to use with discussions and presentations of your work, as well as discussions of topics of general interest. Between the two sessions, you will have the opportunity to submit practice recordings or scripts and receive feedback.
When: November 2 and November 9, 11am-12:30pm (light lunch provided) |
