The Carlos Museum - Scrutiny: The Italian Job Museums everywhere are facing increasing requests from foreign governments for the return of cultural patrimony. How do museums balance the responsibility of caring for a collection with their legal and ethical obligations? Using a group of objects recently repatriated to Italy, Provenance Researcher Annie Shanley and Curator of Greek and Roman Art Ruth Allen, will recount one of these complex situations faced by the Carlos. Learn how the museum navigated foreign legal investigations, machinations of antiquities smugglers, and working with the Italian Republic to return stolen art to its rightful owners. Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Interested in sharing the significance of your research with a wider audience, strengthening your communication skills, and expanding your network? Consider participating in Laney Graduate School's Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) Competition, an academic competition in which graduate students deliver a compelling presentation to a non-specialist audience in three minutes or less.
Participants are ordinarily in later years of study but are not required to be at the defense stage as long as they have reached a point in their research where they have some conclusions to share.
Curious students are also invited to participate in a preparation workshop, “Communicating Your Research: A Workshop on Storytelling” on Tuesday, February 6 from 3:30-5:00pm. This award is named and endowed by the Robert Earl McConnell Foundation to honor current Emory University faculty and staff who have significantly enriched the intellectual and civic life of the Emory community. The award honors a member of the faculty or staff for significant service to Emory through personal activities, influence, and leadership, usually over the course of many years. The award recognizes personal and professional integrity as well as distinguished service in several of the following areas: - Teaching

- University advancement and development in relation to the entire university or to an area, school, or division

Announcing the 2024 ACLS Leading Edge Fellowship Competition The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) are pleased to announce the 2024 competition of the Leading Edge Fellowship program. The ACLS Leading Edge Fellowship program aims to demonstrate the potential of humanistic knowledge and methods to solve problems, build capacity, and advance social justice and equity. The fellowships support recent PhDs in the humanities and interpretive social sciences as they work with social justice organizations across the country. Hosting organizations provide professional development opportunities and employee benefits to fellows, and draw on fellows’ scholarly perspectives and broad set of skills. Fellows receive a stipend of $70,000 for the first year, $72,000 in the second, and have access to funds and opportunities for professional development through ACLS and our alumni network. This initiative is made possible through the support of the Mellon Foundation.
