Doctoral Student Union Update: Collective Bargaining Underway
Last month, Emory University held its first two collective bargaining sessions with SEIU Workers United, Southern Region Local 29. Stay tuned for future updates.
April 8th Session: This session focused on establishing negotiation ground rules and emphasizing a positive, honest, and efficient process. The Union presented several proposals for consideration and also shared a presentation on the subject of parking and transit.
April 29th Session: This session began with a presentation of the Union’s perspective on the protests held on April 25. The Union and the University then discussed specific contract provisions, and reached a tentative agreement on a provision that will create a labor-management committee. The Union also proposed and made presentations about economic issues, such as stipend, fees, health insurance, and parking/transit. The senior director of transportation, parking, and fleet services was present to answer questions about parking fees, shuttle routes, and related issues. The parties continue to discuss a handful of other proposals.
The Union and the University are currently looking for dates for upcoming bargaining sessions.

Laney Programs Continue to Excel (2024/25 U.S News & World Rankings are Out!)
Earlier this month, the U.S. News and World Report announced that once again, Emory's graduate and professional schools ranked among best in the nation, with many of our LGS programs ranking in the top 10 this year and our Biomedical remaining champion at #1. (rated in 2024)
You can see all our programs in the top 10 ranked 2023 forward here.
For us here at Laney, we're just excited that the world knows what we know – our faculty and scholars aren't just among the best – they are the best.
Although not all programs were ranked this year, this doesn't diminish their accomplishments – it just means that a particular program wasn't up for re-evaluation.
