Last Call for Nominations: 2024 Kharen Fulton Award for Diversity and Inclusion
Submit a nomination for the 2024 Kharen Fulton Award for Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement in Graduate Education today.
This award honors the legacy of Kharen Fulton, PhD, former director of recruitment, diversity and admissions at LGS, by recognizing a scholar who has made significant contributions to promoting diversity, equity and inclusion within our community.
The winner will receive a monetary prize and be announced at the LGS Annual Diversity Reception on Tuesday, November 5.
Nominations deadline: 5 p.m., tomorrow, October 29.

After the Vote: Understanding and Repairing a Divided Nation
Post-Election Forum Featuring Ambassador Andrew Young
Candler School of Theology will host a forum reflecting on the election, the path forward for American democracy, and the role of faith communities in healing the country’s divides. The event will feature civil rights leader Andrew Young, former mayor of Atlanta and former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, along with two distinguished Emory scholars: Joseph Crespino and Andra Gillespie. Robert M. Franklin, Jr., the program’s organizer, will serve as moderator.

Kimberly Jacob Arriola, PhD, dean of the James T. Laney School of Graduate Studies, will host open office hours this fall.
All students are welcome to stop by the LGS office located in Suite 200 of the North Decatur Building for a one-on-one chat with Dean Arriola.

A Love Supreme: Lecture-Concert with Earl Brooks and Emory Jazz Ensemble
Earl Brooks, PhD, assistant professor of English at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, will give a public presentation and performance from his recent book, “On Rhetoric and Black Music.”
The lecture will be interspersed with performances of John Coltrane's music by the Emory Jazz Ensemble, directed by Gary Motley.

LGS Graduate Writing Group – Fall 2024 Edition
Join fellow graduate students for focused writing sprints within a supportive
community. Choose from the following two options to help improve your writing.
Option 1 – This group is co-facilitated by The Emory Writing Center and the LGS English Language Support program.

Meet and Mentor: Graduate Student Recruitment
The Advocacy Committee of Emory University’s Residence Hall Association (RHA) is planning to launch Meet and Mentor, Emory’s only university-wide mentorship program this academic year.
The program aims to provide mentorship to Emory undergraduates interested in pursuing graduate education and build supportive mentor-mentee relationships to help students of all backgrounds develop professionally.
Eligibility: Mentors can be current students or alumni who are available to meet with undergraduate mentees 2-3 times a semester to discuss topics related to the curriculum.
Applications deadline: Apply early. First come, first serve. Applications are due by 11:59 p.m., Friday, November 8.

Fall 2024 Dissertation Bootcamp: Focus, Write, and Unwind
LGS Professional Development and Career Planning will co-sponsor a one-day Dissertation Bootcamp along with the LGS English Language Support program, Emory Writing Center and Emory Libraries.
Students will use the Pomodoro Method to engage in focused writing sessions with scheduled breaks for relaxation and networking. Resources such as writing tutors and librarians will be available for support throughout the day. Snacks and refreshments will also be available, and lunch will be provided.
Space is limited: There are 20 open slots.
This bootcamp is geared toward fourth year and above graduate students. Third-year grad students are welcome if space is available.

The Young Scientists Summer Program at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA)
IIASA’s Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP) offers an extraordinary opportunity for PhD candidates to spend a summer in Vienna, Austria, and undertake a scientific project within the scope of their PhD on a topic related to the IIASA research agenda.
The National Academies has a limited number of fellowships, funded by the National Science Foundation, to support travel and living expenses for successful YSSP applicants who are U.S. citizens or are eligible noncitizens enrolled in U.S. graduate programs.

Campus Life’s Student Intervention Services (SIS) is seeking responders to join the SIS team. Students who are second year graduate students and beyond are encouraged to join. The SIS Crisis On-Call Team is staffed 24/7 and responds to students in active crisis. Compensation is provided, and SIS team responders receive ongoing training and support.

Tutoring at The Emory Writing Center
The Emory Writing Center has graduate-level tutors trained to meet with you at any stage of the writing process, from brainstorming to final revisions. Tutors do not proofread or edit, but instead share skills and resources through dialogue and inquiry. In one-on-one consultations, they guide writers to revise and edit their own work.
You can make up to two free appointments per week, either on campus in Callaway N111 or here.

Emory Cares International Day of Service
LGS’s English Language Support program and the Office of Advancement and Alumni Engagement will co-sponsor an annual Emory Cares Day of Service event.
LGS international students will work with faculty and alumni to plant native shrubs to restore woodland growth in Lullwater Preserve.
A picnic will follow the planting event. Children over 10 are welcome.

Serving as a Teaching Assistant in the U.S. Context: Tips and Strategies
The Office of Professional Development and Career Planning and the English Language Support program will hold a “Tips and Strategies for International Teaching Assistants.”
Students will learn how to be effective teaching assistants from five experienced international LGS teaching assistants representing computer science, Islamic civilization studies, nutrition health science, political science, and sociology.

International Education Peace Volunteers invites you to join other Emory
students and scholars on Sundays for one-on-one, casual cross-cultural conversations.

Sponsored by the Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation, this fellowship supports doctoral candidates in their final year of writing who are working in areas of religion or ethics.
