Student Spotlight: Willow Newcomb-Rudden
Willow Newcomb-Rudden, a second-year Master’s in Development Practice Laney Graduate School student, wants to clarify that studying development practice doesn’t mean working in finance or web development, as people often assume.
“I work in international development, which is an interdisciplinary study that falls at the intersection of economics, public policy, global health, and environmental science,” said Newcomb-Rudden, who is concentrating in sustainable environments and livelihoods.

Student Union Collective Bargaining Update
Emory University and SEIU Workers United, Southern Region Local 29, held productive collective bargaining sessions on September 9, September 18, and October 7, 2024.
During the last three meetings, the following proposals were discussed:
- Policing and Protests
- Intellectual Property
- Employment Records
- Payroll
- Discipline and Discharge
- Workspace Safety
- Workload and Work Hours
- Protections for Undocumented and DACA Bargaining Unit Members
- Evaluation and Feedback
- Inclusive Work Environment
- Job Assignments
- Offers and Appointment Letters
The University and the Union reached a tentative agreement on the Policies and Procedures article. This article clarifies that all existing University policies applicable to bargaining unit members will remain in effect. In case of a conflict between University policies and the collective bargaining agreement (CBA), the terms of the CBA will take precedence.
The University and the Union continue to engage in productive discussions and are committed to the bargaining process.
The next session will take place on Monday, October 28. Further updates will be provided as negotiations progress.
