Ben Dratch Wins 2023 3MT® Competition and People's Choice Award |
Congratulations to the winner of Laney Graduate School's 2023 Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition and the People's Choice Award, Ben Dratch, as well as runner-up, Hanna Glenn.
Doctoral students spend hours immersed in the intricacies of their research. An 80,000-word thesis would take about nine hours to present. Yet every spring, the 3MT competition, an academic competition developed at the University of Queensland Australia, challenges students to explain that extensive research in only three minutes, using non-specialist language and a single, static presentation slide.
On April 5, LGS held its annual 3MT competition as part of Graduate Student Appreciation Week at The Hatchery. Ten finalists competed for cash prizes and the winning title, which was decided by a panel of four alumni judges. These judges evaluated the students based on the effectiveness of their communication style, overall clarity, and comprehension. Ben Dratch, a Ph.D. candidate in Chemistry, emerged victorious with his presentation on “Consulting with Nature to Develop Chemical Reactions.”
Runner-up Hanna Glenn, is a Ph.D. candidate in Economics, who presented on the topic “How do Physicians Respond to Technological Change?”.
Why three minutes? The idea for 3MT came about at a time when the state of Queensland was suffering severe drought. To conserve water, residents were encouraged to time their showers, and many people had a three-minute egg timer fixed to the wall in their bathroom. The then Dean of the Graduate School, Emeritus Professor Alan Lawson, put two and two together and the idea for the 3MT competition was born. |

Britney Approximately: A Pop Greek Tragedy
Written and directed by Megan Tabaque with original music by Prerit Chaudhary and Willa Barnett, Britney Approximately is a new play with original pop music about motherhood, isolation, and power. Pushed through a glitter-pink meat grinder, it mixes Eurpides’ Medea with a loose retelling of the Britney Spears conservatorship court battle. One part bombastic and violent Greek tragedy and one hundred parts tragic-pop-diva-revenge-song, this plays asks: What does our treatment of celebrity say about us?

LGS-EDGE Research Symposium
This symposium will feature Laney graduate students from a wide array of disciplines presenting research related to racial and social disparities, community engagement, and the intersection between science and humanity. Social Sciences and Humanities PhD Student Mixer

LGSA x LSO Noche de Gala
The Atlanta Contemporary is again being transformed into Emory's biggest Latinx dance party of the year. The night includes Perreo 404's DJ Vitillaz, two food trucks, drinks (beer and wine for those 21+ with a government-issued ID), churros, photo booth, and a performance by ALAS: Emory's Afro-Latinx dance group. Novelist Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni gives the Sheth Lecture in Indian Studies, discussing and reading from her new book, Independence. Yale University Virtual Postdoc Recruitment Event
Yale University’s Office for Postdoctoral Affairs is hosting its Virtual Postdoc Recruitment Event to engage scholars interested in pursuing postdoctoral training at Yale University. Woodruff Library Digital Preservation Seeking Graduate Student Assistant
The Digital Preservation Program Manager in Emory’s Woodruff Library is seeking a graduate student assistant for 20 hours per week to support the ingest of content into the Emory Digital Collections repository. The student will perform work to prepare, ingest, and ensure quality control of digital collections content, including the following tasks: Editing comma-separated values (CSV) files containing digital collections metadata; running and monitoring ingests of content into Emory Digital Collections; indexing ingested files; performing quality-control reviews of ingested content; and organizing, renaming, or reformatting digital files to prepare for ingest.

2023 Inclusive Cataloging Graduate Summer Internship Opportunity
Emory University Woodruff Library Resource Services Department offers a paid graduate internship in inclusive resource description focused on subject analysis of LGBTQ+ materials and the application of LGBTQ+ terminology to improve description and discoverability of LGBTQ+ library resources. Individuals from underrepresented groups who have a demonstrated interest in LGBTQ+ research or inclusive cataloging are encouraged to apply. Call for Applications: Public Humanities Course-Development Workshop
Graduate students are invited to apply for participation in a three-day Public Humanities course-development workshop, May 16-18 here at Emory. The goal of the workshop will be to create a robust suite of graduate and undergraduate courses that explore and showcase the social value of the humanities and humanistic pedagogy. It will feature presentations by Emory faculty who have created innovative experiential learning opportunities through course design, as well as guided exercises leading to creation of syllabi in your particular field. All participants will receive a stipend.
