“We believe we have found the missing piece to a complete, microscopic understanding of water,” says Joel Bowman, professor of theoretical chemistry at Emory University and senior author of the study.
Emory Chemists have produced the first full quantum mechanical model of water, a breakthrough that will yield an open-source, universal tool for studying the properties of water. The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters published the breakthrough, which used machine learning to develop a model that gives a detailed, accurate description for how large groups of water molecules interact with one another. Congratulations to all of the LGS scholars and faculty involved in this exciting work!
The first author of the study is Qi Yu, a former Emory PhD candidate in the Bowman Lab who has since graduated and is now a postdoctoral fellow at Yale. Co-authors include Emory graduate student Apurba Nandi, a PhD candidate in the Bowman Lab; Riccardo Cone, a former Emory postdoctoral fellow in the Bowman Lab, who is now at the University of Milan; and Paul Houston, former dean of science at Georgia Institute of Technology and now an emeritus professor at Cornell University.

New! Bilateral Path between Academic Research & Teaching Program Expanding
BPART (Bilateral Path between Academic Research & Teaching), is dual-goal program that guides graduate students through the development of an Introduction to Academic Research course aimed at first year students in the fall, that will then be taught by the graduate students in the spring.
The first program goal is the course development (fall) and teaching (spring) experience for the graduate students, and the second program goal is to demystify the undergraduate research experience and make it more accessible and equitable to all undergraduates.
Graduates students will work in teams of 2-3 and both semesters should require no more than 5 hours of time per week. All students must have their PIs support to apply for the program.

New! Bioethics Certificate for Doctoral Students
The Emory Doctoral Certificate in Bioethics program is pleased to announce that we are currently accepting applications for Fall 2022 admissions. The Doctoral Certificate in Bioethics is designed to complement the disciplinary work pursued in any Emory PhD department with interdisciplinary studies on the social and ethical challenges that face medicine, biotechnology and public health. Graduates of our Doctoral Certificate in Bioethics have received job offers from the Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins University, Harvard University and Weill Cornell Medicine.

New! Graduate Student Assistant Needed: Emory National Scholarships and Fellowships Program
The Emory College National Scholarships and Fellowships Program seeks a graduate assistant to provide general program support and event planning support from June 2022 to August 2023. Responsibilities will include serving as an interview and meeting note-taker, assisting with tasks related to event planning (e.g. scheduling, communication, event logistics, program design, social media), providing general proofreading and copy-editing support to full-time program staff, and assisting with advising activities for students and alumni interested in nationally-competitive awards.
