LGS Scholar Receives Andy Zebrowitz Memorial Brain Research Fellowship 

Eva Martinez Luque was selected as the 2022 recipient of the Andy Zebrowitz Memorial Brain Fellowship for her research connecting biomedical engineering to mental health. The fellowship, established by Zebrowitz’s family in his honor, aims to support biomedical engineering (BME) students at LGS as they find new ways to diagnose and treat brain injury, trauma, and bleeding disorders.

Reminder: Emory University international travel policy requires all Emory-sponsored international travel to be approved by the student’s school of enrollment. For LGS students, all Emory-related international travel, regardless of funding source (e.g., PDS award, program funding, etc.), MUST be approved through the LGS International Travel Permission Form.

LGS Dean Kimberly Jacob Arriola is hosting office hours each month for LGS students. Your CV is an essential component of your academic identity, but what should it contain? Making Pandemics Film Screening

 In this documentary, actress Juliette Binoche seeks to understand the causes of this “epidemic of pandemics”. She meets with scientists from around the world to understand the links between human health and the health of ecosystems.

The 100-minute film will be screened in French with English subtitles, and followed by a discussion and Q&A with Dr. Thomas R. Gillespie (featured in the film), Professor of Environmental Sciences & Environmental Health at Emory University & Rollins School of Public Health.

Nucleate program applications deadline extended to Oct 24th!

Nucleate is a nonprofit, student-led organization that provides accelerator-type programs to biotech startups and doesn't take equity or charge any fees. The program connects scientific trainees and business students with a world-class advisor network of startup founders, executives, venture investors, and renowned scientists. 

Nucleate is  looking for:

• PhD students or Postdocs who are interested in commercializing their tech idea, research, or invention 
• Business or law students who can join a team and focus on creating the business model
• Medical students who can join a team and focus on the clinical side of the tech/invention

Business Concepts Course for Life Scientists

Business Concepts for Life Scientists, a course from iBiology, will enhance PhD scientists’ understanding of foundational business concepts. This business coursework is unique because it is designed to prepare scientists for career transitions into both academic and non-academic settings.

Due to a limited number of slots available, graduate students and postdocs will be selected via a lottery system. Preference will be given to those who are able to commit to attending all four sessions.

LGS Writing Group

Are you working on a writing project? If so, our supportive community of writers can help you get it done! Join our weekly graduate student writing group for two hours of dedicated writing time (using the pomodoro method) as well as the opportunity to obtain feedback from a Writing Center graduate tutor or an English Language Specialist, if desired. Come for 1 week or come for them all.

Let's Talk! Drop in Consultations for Emory Graduate & Professional Students

Let's Talk is an informal, free, confidential consultation service that allows graduate and professional students to speak with a clinician and receive support for any challenge they may be experiencing. Let's Talk is not a substitute for formal counselling but can be used to receive short-term support and resources.

Students will meet 1:1 for a 15-20 minute video or phone consultation with their CAPS consultant.

New! ELSP Book Club: Writing in your Discipline 

Advance your English language skills while learning more about writing in your discipline. It’s a win-win! In the upcoming ELSP Book Club, participants will be grouped with others in their discipline (humanities, social sciences, natural sciences). Each group member will be given selected materials to read, all related to writing in that particular discipline. Participants will then share (through both written and oral summaries) what they’ve learned, interview an expert writer from their field, and receive additional resources and language feedback from an English Language Specialist.  

ELSP Book Club will meet a total of 3 times, for 1 hour each, in October and November. Time/day will be determined based on participants’ schedules.  

New! ELSP Workshop Series: Grammar Choices for Graduate and Professional Writers 

In his book Grammar Choices for Graduate and Professional Writers, Caplan (2012) writes, “Every sentence you write for a university assignment, master’s thesis, doctoral dissertation, or research paper is the result of many choices” (p. vii). As you write, you may think “How can I adjust the strength of this claim?” “Should I use present perfect here?” “Can I reduce this clause?” In this 3-part workshop, designed for those who use English as a second or additional language, participants will individually identify areas of grammar that they wish to improve, learn more about their chosen topics, apply what they’ve learned to their own writing, and receive feedback from an English Language Specialist. 

Time/day will be determined based on participants’ schedules.  

New! Emory Eagles Soccer - International Community Watch Party

The International Student and Scholars Office invites the Emory international community to the Woodpec Soccer Field on October 4 to watch the Emory Eagles Soccer Teams (Women’s kick-off at 5 pm; Men’s at 7 pm). All students, scholars, and families are welcome. Admission is free, and ISSS will be providing some snacks and refreshments in the stands. You might even have the chance to take a penalty against Emory’s mascot Swoop!

International Community Friday Lunch (ICFL) 

International Community Friday Lunch (ICFL) is a long-standing collaboration between the Office of Spiritual and Religious Life (OSRL) and International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS). The purpose of this gathering is to extend a warm welcome and build a community for international students and scholars while enjoying free lunch!   

ICFL occurs on Fridays from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in Cannon Chapel Brooks Commons. Meals are limited; therefore, please RSVP in advance for each week you will attend.

Virginia Tech Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship Program Expands

Virginia Tech's Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship program has expanded to include four distinct tracks and opportunities. This program seeks to broadly prepare postdocs for the next step in their careers, providing a two-year appointment with nationally competitive salaries and benefits.

Postdoctoral fellows selected for the program will receive:

• Two-year appointments with nationally competitive salaries and benefits
• $10,000 for training and professional development-related expenses
• Mentoring and professional development support

Proposal Due Date: November 15 

Azrieli International Postdoctoral Fellowship: Applications Now Open

The Azrieli International Postdoctoral Fellowship supports the best and brightest minds in their postdoctoral research, connecting them with world-class academics and leading researchers. The Fellowship provides generous funding for eligible international applicants to conduct research in any academic discipline at eligible institutions in Israel. Azrieli International Postdoctoral Fellowships are awarded without regard to religion, gender, age, or ethnicity.

The fellowship – now open to applicants from around the globe – offers funding of approximately EUR 58,000 (ILS 188,000) for 24 postdocs per year. 

Applications must be submitted by November 15, 2022.
