LGS Wellness Series - Session Three: Self Care as a Graduate  Student

Challenging Negative Career Beliefs Workshop

When persistent and irrational negative thoughts go unchallenged, they can impact our beliefs about our own self-worth and result in anxiety and depression. This workshop will focus on identifying those beliefs that may be holding you back, challenging them, and reframing them in a more positive way.

LGS Dean Kimberly Jacob Arriola is hosting office hours each month for LGS students. All LGS students are welcome – just come to the Dean’s Office (Administration Building, Suite 202) during office hours, sign in upon arrival, and you’ll be able to meet with the Dean individually. The Dean will meet with students in order of arrival. We will offer light refreshments in the office while you wait.

The Emory Libraries and The Writing Center are hosting a dissertation bootcamp for graduate students. If you are looking for dedicated time and space to write and work on your dissertation, this event is for you!

BeiGene Innovation Center (BIC) Speed Interviews

BeiGene is seeking Ph.D. candidates and graduates in Chemistry, Biology, or Biomedical research to apply for research positions in molecularly targeted and immuno-oncology cancer therapeutics. BIC is in Guangzhou, China; applicants from all nationalities are welcome. 2023 Emory Pre-College Program Course Proposals

The Emory Pre-College Program brings bright, ambitious, rising high school Juniors and Seniors to Emory in the summer to give them a short college-level experience. Current Emory faculty, emeritus faculty members, and advanced graduate students with strong teaching records are eligible to propose courses for the Pre-College Program.

Seeking TAs for IDS 220 What Does It Mean To Be Human?

This course, offered every spring through the Institute for the Liberal Arts, is an always changing exploration of the human experience, team taught by graduate student instructors from the humanities, the social sciences and the sciences, under the guidance of Dr. Rose Deighton-Mohammed as an ILA faculty mentor.

Submit CV and a brief statement explaining how your research relates to the question "What does it mean to be human?" online by November 4, 2022.

Mellon Interventions Student Interventions Grants: Internship Supplements 

The Laney Graduate School and the Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry invite eligible Emory PhD students in the humanities and humanistically oriented social sciences to apply for Internship Supplements for the Spring 2023 semester. We plan to support Ph.D. students through a $2,000 internship supplement to their stipends. Students will take GRAD 705 while interning with a community partner (6-8 hours a week). Interested students can apply to work with one of our community partner organizations to assist with ongoing research projects or to develop skills through internship experience.

We encourage eligible students to apply to these opportunities as an opportunity to engage projects related to their own research, explore new areas of public scholarship, or simply expand their public humanities experiences and skills. Awardees will participate in a mid-semester check-in with the Mellon Interventions team and complete a GRAD705 Experience Completion Report with additional Public Humanities- focused content.

• The Christine Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship Program

  The Christine Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship Program is a full-time hands-on training and educational program that provides early career individuals with the opportunity to spend 12 weeks at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in Washington, DC, learning about science and technology policy and the role that scientists and engineers play in advising the nation. This Mirzayan Fellowship offers a unique opportunity to obtain the essential skills and knowledge needed to work in science policy at the federal, state, or local levels.

  These fellowships provide opportunities for outstanding scientists and engineers to learn first-hand about federal policymaking while using their knowledge and skills to address today’s most pressing societal challenges.

This is our last call for applicants for our Nucleate Atlanta Activator Program! Nucleate is a nonprofit, student-led organization that provides accelerator-type programs to biotech startups and doesn't take equity or charge any fees. The program connects scientific trainees and business students with a world-class advisor network of startup founders, executives, venture investors, and renowned scientists. 

Nucleate is  looking for:

• PhD students or Postdocs who are interested in commercializing their tech idea, research, or invention 
• Business or law students who can join a team and focus on creating the business model
• Medical students who can join a team and focus on the clinical side of the tech/invention

LGS Writing Group

Are you working on a writing project? If so, our supportive community of writers can help you get it done! Join our weekly graduate student writing group for two hours of dedicated writing time (using the pomodoro method) as well as the opportunity to obtain feedback from a Writing Center graduate tutor or an English Language Specialist, if desired. Come for 1 week or come for them all.

Let's Talk! Drop in Consultations for Emory Graduate & Professional Students

Let's Talk is an informal, free, confidential consultation service that allows graduate and professional students to speak with a clinician and receive support for any challenge they may be experiencing. Let's Talk is not a substitute for formal counselling but can be used to receive short-term support and resources.

Students will meet 1:1 for a 15-20 minute video or phone consultation with their CAPS consultant.

Today! Halloween Crafts, Candy and Costume Contest

All international students, scholars and their families are invited to enjoy making Halloween crafts  and to share about  similar holidays around the world. Come in costume if you’d like, -  the  person with the best costume will win a prize! This event is hosted by the International Students and Scholars Services (ISSS) office.

New! International Day of Service 

Join up with other international students and alumni as we participate in the 2022 Emory Cares Day of Service. Laney Graduate School international students, faculty and alumni will work together to plant native shrubs to restore the woodland growth in Lullwater Preserve. We will meet on campus at Clifton Road at the main entrance to the preserve. Children over 10 are welcome. Gardening tools will be provided. Project Lead is Heather Boldt, hboldt@emory.edu

Scams are on the Rise

Fraudulent emails and phone calls, some targeting international students (such as the scam described here by ISSS), are becoming more frequent.  Here’s what you can do:

• Be aware that the fraudsters may even have some personal information, like your passport # or your date of US entry, and therefore be very convincing. 
• Check out these tips from the Emory Police department, which include taking a pause before you rush to act. 
• When in doubt, don’t click on any links. 
• For threatening phone calls, ask for a number and say you’ll call back. 
• Check in with your ISSS advisor or Emory’s IT security before responding. 

International Community Friday Lunch (ICFL) 

International Community Friday Lunch (ICFL) is a long-standing collaboration between the Office of Spiritual and Religious Life (OSRL) and International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS). The purpose of this gathering is to extend a warm welcome and build a community for international students and scholars while enjoying free lunch!   

ICFL occurs on Fridays from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in Cannon Chapel Brooks Commons. Meals are limited; therefore, please RSVP in advance for each week you will attend.

AMIS Atlanta (Atlanta Ministry with International Students) is an organization in Atlanta with the mission of “Welcoming and Connecting International Students with Friends.” AMIS offerings include a Welcome Event on the Georgia Tech campus, a blog focusing on the highlights and challenges of being an international student, and more.

Virginia Tech Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship Program Expands

Virginia Tech's Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship program has expanded to include four distinct tracks and opportunities. This program seeks to broadly prepare postdocs for the next step in their careers, providing a two-year appointment with nationally competitive salaries and benefits.

Postdoctoral fellows selected for the program will receive:

• Two-year appointments with nationally competitive salaries and benefits
• $10,000 for training and professional development-related expenses
• Mentoring and professional development support

Azrieli International Postdoctoral Fellowship: Applications Now Open

The Azrieli International Postdoctoral Fellowship supports the best and brightest minds in their postdoctoral research, connecting them with world-class academics and leading researchers. The Fellowship provides generous funding for eligible international applicants to conduct research in any academic discipline at eligible institutions in Israel. Azrieli International Postdoctoral Fellowships are awarded without regard to religion, gender, age, or ethnicity.

The fellowship – now open to applicants from around the globe – offers funding of approximately EUR 58,000 (ILS 188,000) for 24 postdocs per year. 

Applications must be submitted by November 15, 2022.
