The Secret Syllabus of Grad School
Does it feel like everyone else has a guide to grad school and you're just making things up as you go along? Many parts of grad school—especially key "transition" moments—have unspoken expectations (a “hidden curriculum”) that can be hard to decipher. Join Stanford Professor Tom Mullaney as he discusses two pivotal grad school transitions: the transition from coursework to dissertation research, and from "PhD Candidate" to "Early-Career Scholar" status.

Diversity and community are important to Laney Graduate School. That is why LGS-EDGE (Emory Diversifying Graduate Education) is launching a new group: LGS-BLUE (
Black Men at
Laney
United in
Excellence). In the last few years, LGS has seen an increase in Black male enrollment in Laney. EDGE and LGS-BLUE aim to connect and promote community among Black and brown, male-identifying graduate students through various social, academic, and professional activities.
Our first event of the year will be a meet-n-greet with other grad students who would like to affiliate with the group. Be prepared to just kick back, relax, and enjoy some good BBQ. Beverages (wine and beer) will also be served. If you identify as male and black/brown please stop by! Share this opportunity with your colleagues!
This is the first of many groups that will really focus on intersecting identities among our diverse student body, so stay tuned!

Dissertation Bootcamp
Dissertation Bootcamp sessions are a chance for students working on their dissertations to join others for some structured writing time and shared accountability. Each session will have breaks and time for reflection built in, and we will mostly run consecutive "pomodoro" sessions. Of course, we're flexible. If attendees decide we want some free-writing time, or want to partner up for mutual feedback, we will do so.

Emory’s Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) invites graduate students to participate in the inaugural IHI case competition. Emory and Georgia Tech graduate students are challenged to think critically and present innovative solutions to a real-world healthcare problem with a chance to win cash. Students can sign-up as a pre-formed team or can sign up as an individual for placement on a team.

Berlin Graduate Exchange Student Program
The Laney Graduate School maintains a graduate student exchange program with the Freie Universität Berlin (FUB). The program seeks to promote strong academic and cultural ties between the two institutions. One student may be selected to represent Emory at the FUB for the 2022-23 academic year (October 1, 2022 - July 31, 2023). Selection is based on a competitive process.
